Spattering was vigorous in the Kīlauea's summit lava lake this evening, but within the range of normal variation. Spatter was thrown up to the level of the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, about 25 m (80 ft) above the lake surface. The lake level has been slowly rising over the past week, and spattering has been visible from the Jaggar Overlook over the past few days. This photograph was taken closer to the lake, on the rim of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, in an area closed to the public due to volcanic hazards. Photo taken Monday, June 27, 2016 courtesy of USGS/HVO
