Lost hunter and dogs are rescued early Thursday morning (June 9)

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Rescue crews responded to a 6:29 p.m. alarm Wednesday (June 8) to the Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve in the Volcano area for a lost hunter.

Near sunset the hunter’s girlfriend called 911 and said the hunter called via cellphone and said he was lost and that he felt like, ‘he was walking in circles and he was out of water.’ The girlfriend also told 911 dispatch that he has a medical condition.

The fire department sent Engine 19 from the East Hawaii Volcanoes National Park station and Rescue Company Two from East Waiakea to the end of Omaomao Road boundary of the Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve to initiate a search. After a six hour ground search through dense forest Rescue Company Two crews found the uninjured lost hunter and four of his dogs.
