Fire started by candle claims Hilo home Sunday (Sept 9), two injured

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Firefighters answered a 5:10 a.m. alarm to 135 Alani Street in Hilo for a structure fire Sunday (Sept 9).

Crews found a single story home engulfed in flames with all residents outside of the house. It took crews about 37 minutes after arriving to have the blaze under control and the fire was declared out at 6:50 a.m.

Two people were injured in the fire, a woman who refused to go to the hospital and a man who was taken to Hilo Medical Center to be treated for burns and smoke inhalation.

Alani Street was blocked during firefighting operations on the approximately 1,600 square foot home. The loss in the blaze is estimated to be $160,000.

Fire dispatch reports the cause of the fire to be a candle. It was the second structure fire to be caused by a lighted candle within six hours, an earlier fire occured in Volcano district late Saturday.
