Fire/rescue crews responded to a 3:05 p.m. alarm Thursday (April 17) to a cargo truck crash near the 15 mile marker of the Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 190).

Crews found a large International box truck, 33,000 GVW, rolled over onto its left side blocking both lanes of the highway with multiple fluids leaking. The driver had gotten out of the truck without injuries.

Firefighters forced open the cargo area of the truck and removed 20 55-gallon drums and 12 30-gallon drums to prevent more leakage. The damaged truck was righted and towed away. The roadway was cleaned by hazmat crews with absorbant materials.

During the clean-up operation the highway was closed to traffic with motorists being detoured through Kaiminani Drive and Waikoloa Road, police announced the roadway being open at 9:35 p.m.
