The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory for West and East facing shores of the Big Island.

East facing shores of the Big Island

The high surf advisory for East facing shores is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday (March 17).

Surf is forecast to be in five to eight foot range tonight and Saturday morning rising to eight to 12 feet Saturday afternoon through early Monday morning.

West facing shores of the Big Island

The high surf advisory for West facing shores is now in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday (March 16).

Surf is forecast to be in the five to eight foot range for West facing shores of the Big Island. Surf should then be declining below advisory levels by Sunday evening.

Coastal areas can expect strong breaking waves, shore breaks and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed the advice given by ocean safety officials and be careful. Know your limits and when in doubt, don’t go out.

Boaters should expect recreational surfers and bodyboarders using harbor channels to access surfing areas.
