High surf advisory for East facing shore of Big Island

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory for East facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island until 6 p.m. Saturday (Jan 12).

The strong trade winds will bring surf along East facing shores of six to eight feet this evening increasing to heights of seven to 10 feet late tonight and Saturday.

Coastal areas can expect strong breaking waves, shore breaks and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed the advice given by ocean safety officials and be careful. Know your limits and when in doubt, don’t go out. The greatest impacts of the high surf are possible along windward facing beaches late tonight and Saturday morning due to the building surf and large high tide. Minor overwash is possible across shoreline roads on East facing shores.

Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed the advice given by ocean safety officials and be careful. Know your limits and when in doubt, don’t go out.

A small craft advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday (Jan 12) for all Hawaiian waters except the leeward waters of Maui County and Maalaea Bay.
