Fire/rescue crews responded to a 3:28 a.m. alarm to Blane's Drive Inn at 150 Wiwoole Street in Hilo for a fire.

Upon arrival firefighters found that good samaritans had already put out the fire which was outside the takeout counter burning a 12 by 6 foot area. The good samaritans made the call for the fire department. They saw the fire and kicked in a door into Blane's to get a fire extinguisher from the building and put the blaze out.

Waiākea Recreation Center Summer program for fishing and cooking

The Hawai‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation announces Waiākea Recreation Center is offering two classes for youth ages 10-17. The programs will begin June 19th and run to July 21st from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hilo woman is arrested for stealing over $10,000 from Waiakea Intermediate booster club

Big Island police have arrested a 42-year-old Hilo woman this afternoon (April 11) in connection with the theft of money from a public school booster club. Investigators arrested JoAnn Maldonado just after 2:30 p.m. today for second degree theft and false reporting to law enforcement authorities.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating an officer-involved shooting Monday afternoon (June 6) at a home off West Kawailani Street in Hilo.

At about 4:20 p.m., police received a report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, an officer encounter a man wielding a knife, along with a pit bull that had earlier chased paramedics into their vehicle. Several shots were fired by the officer, resulting in the death of the man and the pit bull.

Hawaiʻi Island police have charged a 15-year-old boy in connection with threatening notes left at Waiākea High School in Hilo.

At 11 a.m. Friday (May 20), the teen was charged with second-degree terroristic threatening and fourth-degree criminal property damage. He was then released to the custody of his family.

A 29-year-old Pāhoa man was critically injured in a two-vehicle traffic collision on Tuesday (April 12) at the intersection of Kīlauea Avenue and Kawailani Street.

Responding to a 4:51 a.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined that a 2004 Peterbuilt rubbish truck was traveling south on KÄ«lauea Avenue when it collided with a 2001 Lincoln four-door sedan traveling west on Kawailani Street.

The lineup for the state competition is made up of the four top scoring high school teams in the local online competition, which ran from October 26 to December 4, 2015.

At 10:08 p.m. Sunday, South Hilo Patrol officers responded to the upper Waiākea area of Hilo, where several residents said they heard multiple gunshots in the vicinity of Haihai Street and Nou Street. One car was damaged in the incident.
