Umauma Bridge opens to traffic again Thursday (Nov 19)

The Umauma Bridge, which was closed the past week along Highway 19, has been reopened according to the Hawaii Police Department. The bridge had been closed to allow State Highways Division crews to check the footing of the temporary bypass bridge, heavy rains delayed the inspection.

Umauma Bridge remains closed as crews work to check base

Hawaii County Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveria told Hawaii 24/7 the State Highways Department asked that the bridge be closed until they can check the footings. Due to the recent heavy rains crews would like to check the base of the temporary bypass bridge but heavy water flow has delayed inspections.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday (June 9) on a man’s body found Friday (June 5) under Nanue Bridge in Umauma has determined that he died from injuries consistent with a fall from a height.

Detectives have ruled out foul play.

The decedent was identified as 54-year-old Patrick Dacayanan of Hilo.
