Based on all available data a destructive pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii. Papua new Guinea is forecast to possibly have waves one to three meters in height. Tsunami waves of less than 0.3 meters (about a foot) are possible in Hawaii.

Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter. No tsunami threat exists for other coastal areas in the Pacific although some other areas may experience small sea level changes.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has evaluated the 8.0 magnitude earthquake and has determined that no tsunami threat exists for Hawaii. Tsunami watch and warnings for the South Pacific have now been cancelled.
