Hawaiʻi Island police are again warning the public about a telephone utility scam. Individuals posing as employees of local utility companies and tax officials are calling and threatening to either have the persons utilities turned off for non-payment, or threatening an immediate arrest for non-payment of taxes.

Big Island police are warning the public about a telephone scam that appears to be targeting our elderly citizens.

The caller claims to be a relative and says he or she is in trouble in another state or country and needs money to get out of jail. To make the claim seem more believable, the caller may use the first name of the person answering the phone or of other family members.

A Mountain View woman reported that an unidentified woman with what sounded like a southern accent called her cell phone from a blocked number and claimed that her phone service would be shut off due to an outstanding bill. The caller, who did not disclose what company she supposedly represented, solicited payment over the phone.
