Jet stream brings stronger winds to state summits...

The nearness of the jet stream to the state has increased winds at higher elevations. Although Haleakala is lower than Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa...and has not yet reported strong winds tonight... its more northerly position places it closer to the core of the jet stream.

Southwest winds will increase tonight as a cold front approaches the islands. Winds will subside Friday as the front weakens. Wind advisory remains in effect until 6 am HST Friday. Winds across the Big Island and Haleakala summits will reach 30 to 40 mph tonight...with gusts possibly reaching 55 mph at times.

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for North, West and East facing shores of the Big Island. The advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday with surf forecast to be 7-10 feet through tonight. The Mauna Kea access road has re-opened with about a half-inch of snow above the 13,000 foot level.
