One in critical condition, another dead in possible murder/suicide case in Waimea

Hawaiʻi Island police report that at 8:47 p.m., Saturday evening, (September 8), South Kohala Patrol officers responded to an address on Kanehoa Street in Kamuela for a report of a possible murder/suicide incident. The incident was reported by a third-party on the mainland.

Names of police officer and woman in murder-suicide case released

Hawaiʻi Island police have identified the male and female found dead at a home in Mt. View on Sunday, (April 8), as 54-year-old Jolene-Rae K. Kapua-Allison and 50-year-old Christopher R. Kapua-Allison, a police officer with the Hawaiʻi Police Department.

Sen Hirono joins vote on Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act

Hirono joined a unanimous, bipartisan vote in the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee to advance H.R. 203, the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans (SAV) Act, which would improve access to mental health services and suicide prevention resources for American veterans.

With rates of youth suicide in Hawai‘i on the rise in the last decade, the University of Hawai‘i Mānoa medical school has been awarded $1.4 million to intervene as early as possible in childrens' lives to prevent suicide.

A measure of how serious Hawai'i's problem has become, the medical school's three-year award is part of more than $45 million being allocated to support state-wide suicide prevention efforts.

Big Island police have completed a negligent homicide investigation into the December 13 motor vehicle/pedestrian collision on Hawai'i Belt Road (Route 19) in the Hāmākua District.

On that date, a 54-year-old Hilo man was operating a 2009 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer and traveling west on Route 19 when the tractor-trailer struck a 39-year-old Honoka'a man, who stepped out into the roadway and died from his injuries.

Jolene Medeiros, 24, of Hilo was pronounced dead Saturday morning (January 2) from injuries sustained in a shooting on December 30 in Pi'ihonua.

An autopsy to determine the exact cause of death is scheduled for Tuesday (January 5).

Detectives have reclassified the case from an attempted murder and suicide to a murder and suicide.
