Kaʻū patrol officers responded to the reported drowning at 7:15 p.m. A 47-year-old Ocean View man reported that he had been on shore while his friend was scuba diving for fish fronting the lighthouse at South Point. The scuba diver entered the water around 6:45 p.m. About a half-hour later, his friend heard him yelling for help and called 911.

Big Island police are investigating several thefts of heavy-gauge copper cable from a business in Kaʻū last month.

The multi-weave copper cables stolen from the old South Point wind farm on South Point Road were about 40-feet long and 4- to 6-inches in diameter and covered with black plastic coating. Estimated value of the stolen property is $50,000.

A man who died while scuba diving at South Point on November 16 has been identified as 58-year-old Dan Michael Pech of Anchorage, Alaska.

A preliminary autopsy determined that he died of cardiac arrest.
