Firefighters responded to a 2:19 p.m. alarm Monday (July 4) to Old Puako Beach Road for a brushfire across from the area known as Beach 69.

Crews used two fire engines a tanker unit, medic unit and nine firefighers in total to work the fire. Firefighers were able to get the fire under control by 2:43 p.m. and it was declared out at 3:50 p.m.

A 69-year-old woman died Monday (June 21) from an apparent drowning in waters along the South Kohala Coast. The victim, who was vacationing with family on the Big Island, has been identified as a Gloria Graf of Glendale, California.

All checkpoints are operated and supplied with refreshments and helpers by Hawai‘i hotels and allied organizations. An autopsy conducted Monday (March 8) on Kimo K. Elderts, 28, who was involved in a two-vehicle crash on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway, .3 miles south of the 71 mile-marker on Saturday (March 6) concluded that he died of natural causes and not from injuries sustained in the crash.

Closing date to submit an application is Wednesday, March 24, 2010.  All applications must be received in the Hilo or Kona Planning offices by 4:30 p.m. or be postmarked by March 24, 2010.

The Hawai'i Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a man reported missing in the South Kohala area.



Police recovered a green kayak that was found floating upside down in waters off the South Kohala coast on November 27. In the investigation, police discovered identification for a Jason Winbush, also known as Jason Wilcox, Ken Washington, Ken Wilcox, “WJ” and “JW.”
