Winter weather and wind advisories for Big Island summits

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a Winter weather advisory for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above the 8,000 foot level until 6 p.m. this Wednesday (March 7). Up to three additional inches of snow are forcast which will make driving hazardous due to slippery roads and low visibility.

Winter storm weather subsides on the summits but snow remains

Cloudy skies kept Mauna Kea hidden for most of the day from East Hawaii Thursday (Feb 23). But the summit access road on Mauna Kea was re-opened after the National Weather Service cancelled the storm warnings as ice melted off roadways.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has upgraded their advisory to a winter storm warning for Big Island summits above 8,000 from late Saturday through 6 a.m. Monday (Feb 20).

A low pressure system is bringing cold temperatures to the summits and upper slopes on the Big Island. This and enchanced moisture will combine to produce freezing rain, black ice on roadways, snow and possibly hail. Strong winds are also possible.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has forecast light snow showers for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa through Monday (Nov 21).

High clouds are also forecast to persist through the weekend.

A small craft advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday (Nov 20) for the Kaiwi Channel, Maalaea Bay, Pailolo Channgel, Alenuihaha Channel, Big Island leeward and Southeast waters.

Keck Observatory engineer Andrew Cooper noted that snow began falling on the summit Wednesday afternoon (Sept 14). A time-lapse video of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope shows a dusting of snow falling upon Mauna Kea Thursday morning (Sept 15). Temperatures for the summit are forecast to be 39F Thursday night.

New snowfall amounts of up to 10 inches are expected by late Thursday over the Big Island summits above 11,000 feet. Strong southwest winds gusting to 50 mph will result in significant blowing and drifting snow at the summits. Heavier snow showers could be accompanied by whiteout conditions and possibly cloud to ground lightning.
