Police identify man killed in officer-involved shooting Tuesday (Nov 27)

Hawaiʻi Island Police have identified the man shot and killed in the officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday, (November 27), as 42-year-old Bert E. Mercado of Hawaiian Beaches. An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday, (November 30), to determine the exact cause of his death.

Police officer shot in South Point shootout is recovering

The investigation is continuing into the most recent shooting that occurred on South Point Road in Kaʻū which resulted in the death of Justin Waiki. The case is being handled by the Area II Criminal Investigation Section. The SRT sergeant shot is recovering nicely at Hilo Medical Center and presently is in stable condition.
