Flash Flood Watch for weekend, all Hawaii Island parks are closed Saturday

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Watch for all Hawaii Islands in effect from this evening through Sunday afternoon (March 25). Department of Parks and Recreation reports all parks, including the Kalapana lava viewing area, will be closed Saturday.

An extremely large, long period northwest swell will build quickly during the day, peaking this afternoon and evening. Very large surf well above the warning level is expected beginning this morning and continuing through the weekend, and potentially into Monday for the smaller islands. Winds are from the northeast at 20-35 mph with localized gusts over 50 mph. Winds will be strongest over ridge tops and through mountain gaps as well as leeward slopes of the islands.
