Fire/rescue crews responded to a 1:44 a.m. alarm Monday (Sept 18) for a sinking fishing boat six miles west of Kealakekua Bay in Kona.

Three fishermen, in their 60s, were in a 22-foot fishing boat which was sinking and they managed to phone the Coast Guard and Fire Department letting them know of their situation and position offshore using cellphones.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:40 a.m. alarm Friday (Aug 11) to an area 1/4 mile offshore Kaloli Point for a capsized boat.

Initial reports sent Chopper One searching for the capsized vessel in Hilo Bay but later located a 20-foot Bayliner partially submerged in the ocean 1/4 mile off Kaloli Point in Puna. Two people were treading water next to the boat.

Two injured swimmers rescued from Wailuku River Saturday (May 20)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 4:41 p.m. alarm Saturday (May 20) to the Wailuku River near Piihonua Bridge for two injured swimmers in distress. Three swimmers were swept by the river currents over the Piihonua diversion dam into the waters below just above Piihonua Bridge. Two of the swimmers suffered injuries to their legs.

Three swimmers rescued off Keaau Beach after two swept out by currents

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 2:04 p.m. alarm Saturday (March 25) to Keaau Beach (aka Shipman Beach, Haena Beach) for three swimmers in distress about 100-150 yards offshore. Two girls had been swept out into the ocean due to a current and a man went into the ocean to assist them.

Woman swept away in flash flood Saturday night (Jan 21)

A search for a woman swept away in a Ahualoa flash flood resumed at daybreak Sunday (Jan 22). Rescue crews located and recovered the body of the 47-year-old woman. An investigation is ongoing by police.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 11:03 a.m. alarm Sunday (Sept 25) to an upper waterfall of Makahiloa Stream on the Hilo side of Maulua Gulch for a climbing accident.

A 21-year-old man was rappeling down a 135 foot waterfall and fell the last 25 feet. The man sustained a leg injury in the fall. Due to the steep valley wall and dense jungle rescue crews used Chopper One to airlift the man via a longline attached to a litter. The victim was then taken via an ambulance to Hilo Medical Center in stable condition.
