Deadline for Puu Waawaa hunting permit applications is Friday (Sept 7)

The State of Hawaii, Department of Land and Natural Resources is issuing control permits for feral goats in the makai portion (below Mamalahoa Highway) and control permits for feral goats and feral sheep (polled rams) in the mauka portion (above Mamalahoa Highway) of the Puu Waawaa Forest Reserve.

DLNR is issuing control permits for feral goats in the makai portion of the Puu Waawaa Forest Reserve, and for feral goats and feral polled ram sheep in the safety zones of the mauka portion of the PWW Forest Reserve. Archery only will be allowed for all areas for the first three weekends, starting September 17, 2011 and ending October 2, 2011. This will be followed by two weekends of muzzleloader for feral goats, only in the makai portion of the Reserve, starting October 8, 2011 and ending October 16, 2011.

Effective Tuesday, January 25, 2011, the Fire Closure affecting Mauna Kea Forest Reserve, Puu Waawaa Forest Reserve, Kaohe Game Management Area and Puu Anahulu Game Management Area is cancelled. Recent rains have provided enough moisture to encourage vegetation recovery to reopen areas that have been closed due to high fire danger.
