Punaluu Beach Park closed to swimmers due to shark sighting

Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) reports Punaluu Beach Park in Ka‘u is currently closed due to an 8 foot shark sighting in the area. The public is advised to stay out of the water at Punaluu Beach until HFD Ocean Safety conducts a reassessment tomorrow morning (March 4) and determines if conditions have changed.

Flood advisory issued for Big Island due to heavy rains in Ka‘u

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Big Island until 5:30 p.m. this evening. At 2:18 p.m. weather radar showed heavy rain near Punaluu which is about 45 miles Southwest of Hilo. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary.

Big Island police arrested a 39-year-old Kailua-Kona man Thursday (May 20) on possible drug charges after finding heroin and morphine in his possession during an unrelated arrest.

Officers from the Ka'Å« District, Kona Patrol and the Area II Vice Section worked together to arrest and charge Lee Todd Mallon on a bench warrant stemming from drug and firearms offenses dating back to September 2009.
