Hawai‘i County’s swimming pools are receiving necessary safety improvements that will result in the temporary closure of five facilities, the Hawai’i County Department of Parks and Recreation announced Friday.

Hilo’s NAS Pool and Charles “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium, Pāhala Swimming Pool, Konawaena Pool, and the Kona Community Aquatic Center (KCAC) each will be closed for an estimated 10 days while the upgrades are being made.

Mayor Billy Kenoi will join other dignitaries in welcoming the public back to an improved and expanded Gilbert Carvalho Park during a ceremony set for 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12.

The Hilo facility has undergone upgrades costing approximately $890,000 since it was closed for renovation Sept. 12, 2011. Improvements include remodeling the gymnasium restrooms, new paved walking paths that meet federal accessibility mandates, and installation of new bleachers.

The County of Hawaii, Department of Parks & Recreation announces the closing of Reeds Bay Beach Park from Monday, Aug. 29, through Dec. 31, 2011 for construction activities.  The park improvements will include new accessible walkways with integrated seat walls; grassing and landscaping; and new park amenities such as outdoor showers, a drinking fountain and picnic tables.

The County of Hawaii, Department of Parks and Recreation announces a change in the hours of operation for a few days in November for the Trap and Skeet Range located at 1010 Leilani Street in Hilo.  The facility will be open in the afternoons only from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on November 7 (Saturday) and November 21 (Saturday) and will be closed on the Veterans Day Holiday, November 11 (Wednesday).

The County of Hawai‘i ‘s Department of Parks and Recreation will cease signing up residents to participate in the West Hawai‘i Golf Subsidy Program as of Friday October 30, 2009.

Until then, residents may sign up at the Waimea County Council Office (across from the Police Station) at 64-1067 Māmalahoa Hwy, Suite C-5 (Ph# 887-2043) and at the West Hawai‘i Mayor's Office in Kailua-Kona at 75-5722 Hanama Place, Suite 102 (Ph# 327-3602) on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kolekole Beach Park will be closed to the public for filming on Tuesday, October 27. The park is located along the Hawaii Belt Road north of Honomu.
