Call for water conservation discontinued after Papaikou Well repairs

PāpaÊ»ikou​ Water Conservation Notice – CANCELLED Affected Area: PāpaÊ»ikou (Honolii Bridge to Kalaoa Camp Road), South Hilo, Hawai‘i This is a Department of Water Supply (DWS) update for Friday, January 25, 2019. DWS’ PāpaÊ»ikou Well has been repaired and is now operational. Thus, the water conservation notice for the PāpaÊ»ikou area is cancelled.

UPDATED: Papaikou water main break repaired Tuesday (Nov 13)

The Department of Water Supply (DWS) reports the water main break near Papa’ikou Gym has been repaired. Papa‘ikou residents and customers from Maluna Place, and north along Old Mamalahoa Highway, including all side roads, should have water restored.

Closure of Papaikou Mill Beach due to earthquake damage

Hawai‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation is informing the public that Papaikou Mill Beach will be closed until further notice due to damage sustained during the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred on May 4, 2018. During the earthquake, a concrete wall overlooking the beach area sustained severe damage, which poses a risk to beachgoers.

Hawai`i Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a person wanted in connection with a burglary investigation. Between May 29 and May 31, an unknown person entered a business on the 27-0000 block of the Old Māmalahoa Highway in Pāpaʻikou without permission. Kayden Fuerte was last seen in Pāpaʻikou on January 7 at about 2:50 p.m. He is described as Filipino/Portuguese, about 5-foot-7 and 140-150 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, blue plaid shorts, black shoes and a baseball cap.
