A 37-year-old Papaaloa woman died following a two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon, (December 2), in Paauilo. She was identified as Lori Ann Sato.

Responding to a 3:58 p.m., call, police determined that a 2004 Honda sedan was traveling northbound on Highway 19, near the 34-mile marker, overtaking a vehicle in a no passing zone and was broadsided by a 1999 Toyota pickup that was traveling southbound.

Crossbow wielding man killed by police officer is identified

Hawaiʻi Island police have identified the man shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday (April 29), in Papaʻaloa. He is identified as 59-year-old Gene Bernhardt of Papaʻaloa.

Church bell stolen from Papaaloa Hongwanji Mission

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help about a theft in Papaʻaloa. At 10:12 a.m. Wednesday (October 21), police responded to a reported theft at the Papaʻaloa Hongwanji. They learned that a 100-year-old bronze bell had been stolen. The bell measures 24-inches wide by 30-inches tall. Its value has yet to be determined.

Car and body of driver found in Laupahoehoe area river Monday (Dec 31)

Fire/rescue crews answered a 1:34 p.m. alarm to Papaaloa in the Laupahoehoe area to search for a missing person. The fire department’s Chopper 1 spotted the missing person’s car in a river. Rescue crews found the body of the driver about 100 yards downstream of the car.
