Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section have taken into custody a 19-year-old man in connection with an assault with a sledge hammer that occurred at a residence in Panaewa on March 25, 2011.

On Friday at about 4:00 pm, South Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of an unconscious male at a residence on Auwae Road in Hilo. Responding officers and Fire Department personnel discovered a 55-year-old man with a severe head injury.

Firefighters and medics responded to a 6:17 p.m. alarm to Hale Manu Drive in Panaewa for a structure fire Wednesday (March 9).

A five gallon propane tank leaked gas and ignited in a washroom area of the home. One of the residents of the home said they tried to put out the fire with water but couldn't and evacuated along with their vehicle next to the house and called 911. A washing machine and dryer were burned in the room along with part of the wall.

Big Island police have charged a 32-year-old Hilo man with six offenses stemming from events Sunday that ended with a serious traffic collision.

Early Tuesday afternoon (August 17), detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section charged Alexander Borrero III with first-degree attempted murder, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, reckless driving, resisting an order to stop and first-degree negligent injury. His bail was set at $500,000.
