Pahala brushfire burns 2,300 acres, highway shut down Tuesday (June 19)

As of Tuesday afternoon (June 19) the two brushfire areas near Pahala have burned about 2,300 acres. Highway 11 is closed at the 46 mile marker, motorists should avoid driving in the area.

Fire crews continued the battle into the night against two brushfires along Hawaii 11 in Pahala. High winds complicated the effort in the afternoon, although officials said the winds died down after sunset.

More than one dozen patients - plus staff members - at Ka‘u Hospital and students at a volleyball camp reportedly have been evacuated. They are being sheltered at Naalehu Community Center.

Hawai‘i County’s swimming pools are receiving necessary safety improvements that will result in the temporary closure of five facilities, the Hawai’i County Department of Parks and Recreation announced Friday.

Hilo’s NAS Pool and Charles “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium, Pāhala Swimming Pool, Konawaena Pool, and the Kona Community Aquatic Center (KCAC) each will be closed for an estimated 10 days while the upgrades are being made.

Representative Bob Herkes, the legislature, Kona Community Hospital and HMSA spearheaded the mobile van with the legislation and sponsorship for funding and staffing. The van will initially be working in Pahala at the public school.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 5:12 p.m. alarm for a single vehicle crash on Highway 11 between the 47 and 48 mile markers Thursday (Feb 23).

Crews found a passenger van crashed with seven Japanese visitors who did not speak English with multiple injuries. Medic units and Chopper Two were used to transport six patients to Ka‘u Hospital and Hilo Medical Center.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 11:57 a.m. alarm Thursday (Feb 16) to Pahala Mill off Mailie Street for a structure fire.

Crews found a 40 foot by 30 foot enclosed section of an abandonded warehouse on fire. Firefighters had the fire under control 10 minutes after arriving on scene and had the fire out by 1:15 p.m.
