Searchers spent a final day Monday (June 2) looking for a 30-year-old man who was last seen Thursday (May 29) picking Opihi along the shoreline of Cape Kumukahi in Puna. Search crews used used off-road vehicles, ATV’s and personnel on foot to investigate the shoreline area and found no signs of the missing Opihi picker.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 6:21 p.m. alarm Sunday (July 4) for an opihi picker who was swept into the ocean at Kings Landing in Hilo. The Fire Department’s Chopper One used a Billy Pugh net to rescue the victim from the ocean onto the shore. The opihi picker was uninjured.

Fire department crews found the remains of a missing opihi picker Joseph Pacheco Jr. Friday morning (June 25). The remains of Pacheco were found at a depth of 25 feet and 20 feet offshore fronting his last known location. The remains were found by rescue divers on their second dive of the day.
