Police identify man killed in Kona mo-ped crash

Police have identified the man killed Thursday (March 21) from a moped crash on Painted Church Road in Hōnaunau, as 23-year-old Shyden D. Bento of a Captain Cook address. Big Island police are warning the public that West Hawaiʻi has experienced a rash of auto and moped thefts in recent weeks.

The auto thieves seem to be targeting Honda sedans, Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks and mopeds, but other vehicles have also been stolen. Since July 1, police have investigated 25 cases of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

The Hawaiʻi Police Department has noticed an increase in moped thefts on the Big Island.

Mopeds have been taken from a variety of locations such as residential subdivisions, apartment complexes, business establishments, shopping centers and public parks. They have been removed through various means such being driven off with keys in the ignition, being "hotwired" and even being lifted into the back of pickup trucks.

Around 8:05 p.m. Sunday, Kona Patrol officers responded to a reported vehicle/mo-ped accident at the intersection of Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway and Kealakehe Parkway. A witness said the vehicle was traveling south on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway and preparing to turn left onto Kealakehe Parkway when it struck the mo-ped in the intersection and then continued its left turn onto Kealakehe Parkway without stopping.

A 23-year-old Captain Cook man died Monday (December 20) at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/moped crash which occurred on Saturday (December 18) at the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kealakehe Parkway. The victim was identified as Kainoa Austin Abril of a Captain Cook address.
