High wind warning for Big Island summits

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high wind warning for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea until 6 a.m. Monday (March 9). Winds are coming from the west at 45-70 mph with localized gusts over 90 mph. The strongest winds are expected to be Sunday day and night.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Wind Advisory for Big Island summits until 6 a.m. Wednesday (Jan 7). Winds are coming from the northwest to north at 35-50 mph with localized gusts near 60 mph. Winds will be strongest over the highest elevations and summit peaks mainly above 11,000 feet.

Volcano Watch: Hilo was again threatened by a Mauna Loa lava flow in 1881

Hilo was threatened by lava during an eruption sequence that started at the summit in early May 1880. After a several-month hiatus, the sequence resumed on November 5, 1880.
