Mothers Against Drunk Driving awards for police and county attorneys

Eight Big Island police officers and two Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys were honored this week by Mothers Against Drunk Driving-Hawaiʻi, co-sponsored by Servco Pacific/ Big Island Toyota, for their efforts and dedication last year for their fight against drunk and drugged driving in efforts to reduce injuries and deaths on our roadways from impaired drivers.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving honored eight Big Island police officers Thursday (June 9) for their efforts in arresting motorists for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

At a luncheon ceremony at Encore restaurant in Hilo, sponsored by Big Island Toyota, certificates of appreciation were handed out to officers.

MADD Hawaii County will host their annual Candlelight Vigil at Hospice of Hilo on Saturday (Nov 21) from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  The vigil offers victims and the community an opportunity to remember loved ones killed and to honor those who have rebuilt their lives after serious injury, all caused by impaired  driving and other violent crimes.

Big Isle police are informing motorists that police will be conducting DUI checkpoints throughout the Big Island in anticipation of the upcoming Labor Day holiday. The effort is part of a national and statewide campaign called "Drunk Driving: Over the Limit. Under Arrest." Sergeant Kelly Ka'aumoana-Matsumoto, head of the Traffic Services Section, said police are reminding motorist of the consequences of impaired driving.
