Fire/rescue crews answered an 11:34 a.m. alarm Sunday (Oct 26) for two lost hikers on the Captain’s Drive/Ala Kapena Drive trail in the Volcano area. Ground crews and Chopper One were dispatched for the search.

Search continues for lost fisherman off MacKenzie State Park in Puna

Fire/rescue crews spent another day searching for a 56-year-old fisherman last seen about 9 p.m. Friday (June 6) before falling into the ocean near MacKenzie State Park. Sources say the man either fell or was swept into the water by a wave fronting the Malama Flats area.

A 28 year-old man and 32 year-old woman were hiking out of the Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve when they wandered off the main trail and ended up lost .6 miles Southeast of the trail. Unable to find their way back out of the forest the pair were able to call the fire department via a cellphone which had intermittent signal coverage in the forest.

Hawaii County's Chopper One airlifted two lost female hikers out of the rainforest of the Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve in Volcano, Hawaii Tuesday afternoon (Dec 28).

The two women, aged 20 and 31 years-old, had hiked through the rainforest into a clearing near Pu‘u O‘o vent. Upon returning the pair got disoriented and were unable to located the main trail back out in an area dominated by large Hapu‘u Ferns and old growth Ohia trees. The women called 911, both Chopper One and firefighters were dispatched at about 3 p.m.

The hikers called for help via cellphones after they got lost amongst the numerous trails in the area and were unable to find their way back to their rental car parked at the trailhead on Captain's Drive.
