Big Island police are investigating the theft of longan fruit from several Kurtistown farms.

Multiple thefts were reported between February 21 and March 8 . During that time, 20 longan plants and more than 1200 pounds of fruit were stolen.  These types of agricultural thefts constitute a felony offense.

Big Island police are investigating a car break-in during a funeral in Hilo on June 17.

A 70-year-old Kurtistown woman woman reported that she left her purse in her car while she attended a funeral in the Wainaku area between 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. When she returned to her car, her purse was missing. The purse contained cash and personal belongings.

Big Island police are investigating a reported home invasion robbery early Wednesday morning (September 15) in Puna. 

Responding to a 4:40 a.m. call, Puna patrol officers arrived at a home on Opeapea Street in Kurtistown, where they met with three victims, a 51-year-old woman, a 39-year-old man and a 92-year-old man. The residents described a large dark truck that entered their driveway with two suspects, who exited the vehicle. At least one of the suspects was armed with a rifle.

Clean drinking water will be more easily available to county residents when six new water spigot stations are built by the County of Hawaii over the next 20 months.

Three of the new water stations will be installed in the District of Puna, where the largest percentage of Hawaii Island residents live who are not connected to the county’s water supply system. These stations will be located at the Nanawale Estates Subdivision, Keaau Transfer Station and Kurtistown Ballpark.
