Big Island police have arrested a Hilo man in connection with a dozen car break-ins in Hilo. 

Most of the break-ins were in either downtown Hilo along Kilauea Avenue or the Keaukaha area. 

The investigation began when an employee of a Kilauea Avenue business reported that she saw a man open her car door, grab her purse and run away on October 26. The woman chased the suspect on foot but lost him after he turned up Kukuau Street.

All services along Kalaniana‘ole Avenue from Andrews Avenue to Lokoaka Street and including Onekahakaha Road, Machida Lane, Kamokuna Street and all side streets, Keaukaha, South Hilo, Hawai’i. Water will be temporarily turned off between the hours of 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. to repair a leaking main.

Firefighters responded to a 7:50 p.m. alarm Thursday (June 30) to 1911 Kalanianaole Avenue for a kitchen on fire in a condominium unit on the fifth floor.

Firefighters had the blaze out by 8:25 p.m. then ventilated the unit of smoke. Damage is estimated to be $25,000. There were no injuries reported, traffic on Kalanianaole Avenue was detoured through Nene Street during the operation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Hawai'i Police Department reminds the public that some areas along Kalaniana'ole Avenue in Keaukaha are designated as "No Parking" zones. These area are designed to allow emergency vehicles access to assist the public.

During this summer season, the number of beach goers is expected to increase, leading to a potential parking shortage. Police ask the public to take extra care not to park where signs prohibit parking. Officers will issue citations for violations.

Big Island police have called off their search for 19-year-old Zoe Domizio of Pāhoa, who was reported missing.

She contacted her family Thursday afternoon (April 28).
Zoe Domizio is described as Caucasian, about 5-foot-9, between 210 and 230 pounds with shoulder-length black hair, brown eyes and a fair complexion. 

She was last seen in Kea'au on Friday (April 22) around 2 p.m.  She may be in the company of two other females and may be in the Keaukaha area of Hilo.

The East Hawai'i HI-PAL program, in collaboration with Ben Pana and the Keaukaha Community Association Athletics Program, will hold the Fourth Annual "Halloween Havoc" 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament in Keaukaha. This two-day tournament will be held October 23-24 at the Kawananakoa gymnasium.

The Leleiwi Community Association organized a trail clean-up on Saturday (August 28) in Keaukaha.

Community members, along with the County of Hawai'i Parks and Recreation Department and the Hawai'i Police Department's Community Policing Section, worked in partnership to beautify the Lokoaka Trails. Trails begin from the parking lot area off Kalanianaole Avenue and lead to Carlsmith Beach Park and the Lalakea area.

A 44-year-old Hilo woman reported that she was sunbathing at Carlsmith Beach Park around 4:30 p.m. last Tuesday (July 27). Several males were drinking nearby and she attempted to leave the area. On of them reportedly hit her on the back of the head several times, punched her in the face and stole a black fanny pack with contents.

The Hawai'i Police Department is reminding the public that some areas along Kalaniana'ole Avenue in Keaukaha are designated "No Parking" zones. Those areas are designed to allow emergency vehicles access to assist the public.

With the summer season and sunny weather, the number of beach goers is expected to increase, leading to a potential parking shortage. Police ask the public to exercise caution and not park on the roadways or where posted signs prohibit it. Officers will continue to issue citations to ensure the safety of our community

Big Island police have initiated a missing person case in connection with a 41-year-old man who failed to return from a day of picking opihi.



Joseph Pacheco Jr. of Hilo left to pick opihi along the King's Landing coast around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday (June 22) but failed to return home. Fire Department personnel conducted a search and located the man's dog and backpack about one mile south of Shipman Estates Beach.
