A recent recycling audit conducted in October, established that 98 percent of the waste generated at the facility by County employees is being recycled or reused instead of being thrown into our landfills. The diversion rate for the entire facility, including public-generated waste, is 90 percent.

The Hawaiʻi Police Department will hold a community meeting on Thursday, November 17, from 12-2 p.m. at the Kealakehe police station. The purpose of the meeting is to allow the public to meet the Police Department's command staff and to discuss concerns with the police chief and commanders who oversee police operations in the Kona District. This event continues the district community meetings, which are rotated monthly throughout the eight police districts on the Big Island.

The Kealakehe Waveriders hosted the Leilehua Mules Friday night (Nov 11) in Kona  and suffered a 35-24 loss bringing their season to an end. The third seed Lahainalunas defended their home turf with a 23-6 win against the Wildcats. Lahainaluna will meet second seed Waipahu Friday night on Oahu.

Mayor Billy Kenoi will officially mark the start of solar power at the West Hawai’i Civic Center (WHCC) on Tuesday, August 2, at 3:30 p.m. when he turns on the 250-kilowatt solar photovoltaic project at the new County facility. This will convert the 80,000-square-foot complex to 100-percent solar power.

The official dedication of the West Hawai’i Civic Center will take place Thursday, April 14 at the new facility located at 74-5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway, on the corner of Ane Keohokalole Highway and Kealakehe Parkway.

The dedication begins at 4 p.m. with a short ceremony at the gazebo in the middle of the civic center. An open house will follow. Donated refreshments will be served during the blessing and open house, which will conclude at 6 p.m.

On Tuesday, January 25th 2011 NFL Football Players and NFL Cheerleaders will be holding Youth Clinics for Hawaii Island students at Kealakehe High School from 3:00–5:30 PM and Wednesday, January 26th 2011, at Keaau High School from 3:00–5:30 PM.  Players and cheerleaders will also be visiting local schools for assemblies before the clinics. The NFL Pro Bowl Youth Clinics, now in its ninth year, is focused on motivating our youth to realize their dreams and to maximize their potential.

A 23-year-old Captain Cook man died Monday (December 20) at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/moped crash which occurred on Saturday (December 18) at the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kealakehe Parkway. The victim was identified as Kainoa Austin Abril of a Captain Cook address.

Big Island police arrested a 21-year-old man Tuesday (December 14) during a lockdown at Kealakehe High School.

Kona patrol officers responded to a 9:16 report of a trespasser on campus. Upon arrival, police learned that the intruder had displayed a knife when contacted by a school security guard for being on campus without permission. The school security guard restrained the suspect until police arrived.
