Fire burns over 1,000 acres near South Point in Ka‘u

Fire/rescue crews answered a 2:31 p.m. alarm Sunday (June 1) to the Ka‘alu‘alu area of South Point for a brushfire. The brushfire originated near Ka‘alu‘alu Bay and was quickly pushed by tradewinds in a Northwest direction. About 1.5 hours after report of the fire the area burned was 421 acres.

Police rearrest Ka‘u man charged with attempted murder

Hawaiʻi Island police have rearrested a Kaʻū man charged with attempted murder and other offenses in connection with a stabbing May 10 in the vicinity of James Kealoha Beach Park in Hilo. At 10:28 a.m. Thursday (May 22), detectives arrested 46-year-old Paul Gibson of Ocean View in Hilo District Court.

Police community meeting in Naalehu Tuesday (March 18)

The Hawaiʻi Police Department will hold a community meeting at noon on Tuesday, March 18, at the Nāʻālehu Community Center. The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Ka‘u District of the Big Island until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (Jan 14). At 5:26 p.m. weather radar showed an area of nearly stationary showers over the Ka‘u District between Punaluu and Wood Valley.
