Kohala swimming pool reopens for use

The Hawai’i County Department of Parks and Recreation announces the mechanical issues that caused the closure of the Kohala Pool on April 19, 2018, have been resolved, and the pool is now open for public use. The Department thanks pool users and the general public for their patience during this unexpected closure.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 7 p.m. alarm Sunday (Aug 27) to Kapaau Road in North Kohala for a structure fire.

Upon arrival crews found a single family home engulfed in flames and collapsing. Several propane large propane tanks exploded during the fire with others venting fuel.

Police are searching for a Kapaau man wanted for assault and probation violation

Hawaiʻi Island police have located a 34-year-old North Kohala man who was wanted for assault and violating probation. Owen K. Ching of Kapaʻau was arrested Wednesday (May 4) in Kapaʻau and charged with first-degree terroristic threatening, second-degree assault and probation violation. His bail was set at $50,000.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating three thefts within a week at a nursery in Kapaʻau. 

Sometime between July 5 and July 7, $100 worth of potted plants were removed from a bamboo nursery on Pratt Road. Between the evening of July 10 and the morning of July 11, $500 worth of potted plants were removed. Between the evening of July 11 and the morning of July 12, $2,456 worth of potted plants were removed.

Two people have been charged with theft and burglary in connection with a break-in last week in Kapaʻau. The burglary at a home on Lehuʻula Circle was reported October 5. Numerous items valued at $3,000 were stolen, including electronics, purses and wallets.
