Tropical Storm Flossie causes power outages in Puna (UPDATE July 29, 2 p.m.)

Hawaii Electric Light Company has announced that fallen trees caused by gusty winds from Tropical Storm Flossie are causing power outages throughout the lower Puna area. At this time, approximately 5,000 customers are without power.

Police identify woman found dead in waters off Kalapana

Hawaiʻi Island police have identified the victim whose body was found Tuesday (May 28) in waters off Kalapana in the Puna District. She was identified Thursday (May 30) through fingerprints as 25-year-old Brittany-Jane Royal, who had recently moved to Kalapana. Her last known permanent address before the move to Hawaiʻi was in Tustin, California.

Woman found floating off Kalapana determined to have been strangled to death

Hawaiʻi Island police have reclassified a coroner’s inquest case to a murder in connection with the discovery of a body Tuesday (May 28) in waters off Kalapana in the Puna District. An autopsy conducted Wednesday (May 29) determined that the female victim died of strangulation and that the manner of death was homicide.

A Puna man apparently drowned Sunday morning in waters off Kalapana.

The victim was identified as 44-year-old Henry Kaawakoa of Pāhoa.

Puna Patrol Officers responded to a 10:22 a.m. report of a drowning victim on a boat at sea.

According to witnesses, Kaawakoa was diving off the boat when he was seen floating. His companions took him aboard the boat until Fire Department personnel retrieved his body. He was officially pronounced dead at Hilo Medical Center at 1:30 p.m.

Big Island police have initiated a terroristic threatening case in connection with reports of a woman with a gun Wednesday afternoon (February 22) in Puna.

Around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Puna patrol officers responded to a report of a woman pointing a rifle at passersby near the end of  Highway 130 in Kalapana. Officers located and arrested 34-year-old Welo Kuuipo Dela Cruz of Kalapana without incident and recovered the weapon, which was determined to be an air rifle.

Big Island police are investigating a reported robbery early Saturday morning in Kalapana.

A 19-year-old man was asleep in a white sedan parked on the ocean side shoulder area of Route 137 about 200 to 300 feet north of the turnaround area.  He reported that he had attended an event held at a local establishment earlier in the evening.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:12 a.m. alarm Wednesday (July 27) for a two-story home on fire on Oceanview Parkway in the Blacksands Subdivision in Puna.

Fire crews found the first floor of the home engulfed in flames with the fire spreading to the second floor. Firefighters witnessed a large explosion of a 100 gallon propane tank which blew the roof off part of the garage.
