On December 7, 2012, at approximately 8:15 a.m., a joint task force apprehended Hawaii Community Correctional Center escapee Jarvis Higa, 35 years-old, in Ocean View, Ka‘u, after he attempted to flee a residence on foot. Higa was arrested for multiple charges including escaping from the Hawaii County Correctional Center.

Big Island police have identified a body found November 3 at Waikini Beach in Kaʻū as 48-year-old Terry Lee Day, who lived in the Ocean View area but had no permanent address. Day was identified Tuesday afternoon (November 13) through dental records.
