Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park announced Tuesday (Aug 21) its goal to reopen parts of the park by September 22 – National Public Lands Day. Exact details of what will be open are pending, but visitors should expect limited hours and services and only some areas in the park will be open.

Kahuku Unit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park extends hours and programs

Starting Wednesday, August 15, the Kahuku Unit of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will extend its operating hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., adding an additional hour each day Wednesday through Sunday. Entrance and all programs are free. Kahuku is closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Volcano fire station apparatus and crews moved from Kilauea Military Camp to various locations

Due to the continued Halema‘uma‘u collapse events and the degradation of Highway 11 between the 28 to 32-mile marker, the Volcano Fire Station apparatus, and personnel, which were located within the National Park at the former Kilauea Military Camp (Station 19), have been temporarily relocated to safer locations.
