Partial shutdown of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park services during government shutdown

During the shutdown of the federal government due to a lapse of appropriations, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will remain as accessible as possible while still following all applicable laws and procedures. Some park roads, trails, and viewpoints in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will remain accessible to visitors, but emergency and rescue services will be limited.

Mauna Loa Road closed due to very high fire danger

Due to very high fire danger on Mauna Loa, park officials have closed Mauna Loa Road at the gate near Kīpukapuaulu parking area until further notice. Non-motorized day use such as hiking and bicycling will be permitted, and backcountry camping on Mauna Loa is allowed with a permit.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will reopen Mauna Loa Road, trail and cabins Monday (Oct 8)

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will fully reopen Mauna Loa Road to vehicles on Monday, Oct. 8, along with the Mauna Loa Trail, the 13,677-foot summit and both high-altitude cabins.

Pahoa Post Office

Postal services suspended during the Kilauea Eruption partially resume Tuesday (Oct 9)

The National Park Post Office, located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, will reopen for business as usual. Its hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to conduct helicopter operations

In addition, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory may conduct flight operations over Kīlauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation. The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather.
