Police to make ‘active shooter’ presentation in Honokaa Tuesday (July 19)

The Hawaiʻi Police Department will make an “active shooter” presentation in Honokaʻa on Tuesday, July 19. The presentation, which is open to the public, will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the large conference room at the North Hawaiʻi Education and Research Center, located at 45-539 Plumeria Street.

Hawaiʻi Island police are renewing their request for information about a 48-year-old man who was reported missing. Michael Kalla was last seen October 5 in Kalapana. His last known address was in Honokaʻa. He is described as 6-foot-1, 200 pounds and muscular with balding dark blond hair, green eyes and a scar under his chin.

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in providing information about a burglary in Honokaʻa on March 27.

The break-in occurred at a home on the 45-300 block of Lehua Street, which is in the Haina Camp area, sometime between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. on that date.

The items stolen included electronics, power tools, silver dollar coins, a Booker T. Washington 50-cent piece and a black Cordoba electric guitar with abalone shell around the sound hole.

Because of Western Week festivities in Honokaʻa, Māmāne Street will be closed to traffic from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday (May 27) between Koniaka Place and Lehua Street.

On the same date, a Western Week parade will close all of Akia Street and portions of Lehua Street, Māmāne Street and Puakalo Street from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Parking will be available at the Honokaʻa Park and Sports Complex.

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in providing information about the theft of a generator in January.

Sometime between January 26 and January 27, an older-model Hitachi 6000 generator on wheels was removed from a base yard on Wailana Place in Honokaʻa. The generator was faded green with a black frame and its fuel gauge cover was sealed with silicone due to a previous leak.
