Fire in Hilo burns third floor apartment, displaces residents

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 3 p.m. alarm Tuesday (Dec 12) to 270 Ululani Street in Hilo for an apartment fire. Crews arrived to find a third floor apartment with its bedroom engulfed in flames. The fire sent flames into the attic of the three-story apartment building over the neighboring unit.

Late Thursday afternoon (December 7), after conferring with the Hilo Prosecutors Office, the driver of the 2018 Nissan sedan involved in Wednesday’s traffic fatality, 26 year-old Dylen Benevides, was released from police custody pending further investigation. He was initially arrested for Negligent Homicide.

Hawaiʻi Island police have charged a Puna man in connection with a Puna burglary and a Hilo auto theft incident. On April 4 of this year, a 50-year-old woman reported a burglary at her Mt. View residence in Puna. Miscellaneous household items and electronics valued in excess of $900 were taken.

Hawaiʻi Island police are renewing their request for the public’s assistance in locating a 35-year-old Hilo woman who was reported missing on, (August 6). Parker Godwin, also known as Amanda Burnell, was last seen in the Kalapana area in the Puna District wearing a blue tank-top, blue silk shorts with a lime-green band and slippers.

Hawaiʻi Island police have initiated a Coroner’s Inquest in connection with the discovery of a body along the coastline of Hilo Bay.

At 1:39 p.m., Friday afternoon, (December 1), police and fire personnel responded to the 26-200 block of the Hawaiʻi Belt Road, (Highway 19), in Wainaku for a report of a body found along the shoreline, located approximately 35-feet down a cliff line. The body had to be airlifted out of the area by the fire department’s helicopter.
