HELCO finds utility poles damaged from lava and quakes

Two poles damaged by a nearby lava flow fell on Kahukai Street in the Leilani Estates subdivision today, underscoring the need for continued caution around electric equipment even in areas where eruption activity has subsided.

HELCO inspecting power lines and poles, shutting off gear damaged by lava

Hawai‘i Electric Light personnel are inspecting equipment in the Leilani Estates and Lanipuna subdivisions and shutting down parts of circuits that are threatened or already damaged by the lava flow. Line crews today replaced a pole on Leilani Avenue that may have been toppled by volcanic activity that shifted the ground.

Earthquake causes power outage for Hawai‘i Electric Light customers

Hawai‘i Electric Light reports that about 14,400 customers experienced a power outage at 12:33 p.m. today following a 6.9 magnitude earthquake. HELCO reports power outages due to the earthquakes on Hawaii Island

At around 12:30 p.m. Friday (May 4) about 14,000 customers in Hilo, Kaumana, and pockets in Puna lost power due to the strong earthquake. Currently, about half of the customers have been restored and about 6,300 remain without power. Hawaii Electric Light Company crews are working to restore power.

HELCO expects enough power for Hawaii Island despite Puna Geothermal Venture shutdown
