Hawaii’s efforts to build a clean energy future got a tremendous boost in 2010 as the number of customer-sited solar electric installations on Oahu, Hawaii Island and Maui County more than doubled over 2009.

“Interest in solar power has steadily increased in recent years, but it really took off in 2010,” said Robbie Alm, Hawaiian Electric executive vice president. “This will help all of us in Hawaii as we continue to make progress in cutting our dependence on imported oil.”

Hawaiian Electric Company and its subsidiaries, Maui Electric Company and Hawaii Electric Light Company, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 1260, have reached a tentative settlement of their labor contract.

The contract agreement must still be ratified by the union membership.

IBEW represents approximately 1,280 workers (54% of all employees) for the three companies, which provide electric service for Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Hawaii Island.

Hawaiian Electric Company, subsidiary of Hawaiian Electric Industries, Inc, today signed a contract for a local company, Aina Koa Pono, to provide sustainable, locally grown and processed biofuel for electric generation in Hawaii. With planned operations in the Ka‘u region of the Hawaii Island, the project will initially supply biofuel to Keahole Power Plant on that land.
