On March 13, 2012 at about 1:34 pm, Puna patrol officers responded to the Hawaiian Acres subdivision after receiving a report that a 47 year-old Volcano man reported that while he and his family were driving on Road 10, he heard what sounded like a gunshot and something impacting his vehicle.  He discovered that a window on his American made van was shattered and he immediately drove away and called police.

A power shut-off is scheduled to allow HELCO crews to upgrade electrical facilities on North & South Kulani Roads at Hwy 11.
We recommend that refrigerators and freezers be opened only when absolutely necessary. If refrigeration or medical needs are critical, other arrangements should be made.

Big Island police have located 29-year-old Erick Jason Smith of Kurtistown, who was wanted in connection with the sexual assault of an adult female on August 2. 

Smith was arrested August 6 on suspicion of kidnapping, theft, criminal property damage, interfering with reporting a crime and six counts of sexual assault. After conferring with prosecutors, detectives released him pending further investigation.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 4:27 p.m. alarm for a structure fire in Hawaiian Acres at the corner of Moho Road (Road 8) and Kea Street (Road B) Thursday (July 8).

Arriving fire crews found a majority of the fire being extinguished by a neighbor with a garden hose. The fire was in a 20x20 foot area under the raised home. There was some fire damage to the interior of the home which firefighters extinguished along with remaining fire on the exterior.

Big Island police are searching for a 57-year-old Puna man reported as missing.

Stephen Baybrook of Hawaiian Acres was last heard from Thursday afternoon (June 10).  He has a medical condition that requires medication.

Baybrook is described as 5-foot-10, 200 pounds and clean shaven with gray hair and brown eyes. He is known to frequent the Hilo area. He drives a 2008 green Chevy Cobalt sedan.

Big Island police are requesting the public's help in obtaining information about the damage and theft of traffic signs at the end of South Kulani Road near the entrances into the Hawaiian Acres and Fern Acres subdivisions. Damage and theft of signs in both subdivisions has been an ongoing problem.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:35 p.m. alarm Tuesday (April 6) for a structure fire in Hawaiian Acres on Road 3 between Roads B and C.

Upon arrival crews found a 400 square-foot single story home engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control at 11:20 p.m. and had the fire out 25 minutes later.

Fire/rescue crews responded to an 8 p.m. alarm Sunday (Dec 3) for a structure fire in Hawaiian Acres on Road 11 off Road D.

Upon arrival crews found a collapsed, unoccupied single story 20x40 foot structure engulfed in flames. Crews were able to prevent the spread of the fire to surrounding brush and had the fire under control by 8:35 p.m.
