Umauma Bridge remains closed to traffic, detour to cause delays

According to Hawaii County Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveria the State Highways Department asked that the bridge be closed until they can check the footings. Due to the recent heavy rains crews would like to check the base of the temporary bypass bridge but heavy water flow has delayed inspections.

HELCO to work on transmission lines and poles on Hamakua Coast

Hawai‘i Electric Light announces it will begin construction along Highway 19 between the 24-mile marker in Pāpa‘aloa and the 27-mile marker in Laupāhoehoe on the Hāmākua Coast. One lane will be closed to traffic along sections of the highway from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily starting November 7, 2015.

Police still looking for missing Hamakua teen

Hawaiʻi Island police are renewing their request for information about a 16-year-old Hāmākua girl who was reported missing. Shalee Minamishin was last seen in the Hāmākua District on July 31. She is described as 5-foot-3, 100 pounds with brown eyes and long brown hair.

Hawaiʻi Island police are searching for a 43-year-old Hāmākua man who is wanted on a bench warrant.

Dan Vanells, who also goes by the names Dan Van Ells and “Danno,” is wanted for contempt of court. He is also wanted for questioning in connection with another incident.

He is described as 5-foot-10, 175 pounds with hazel eyes, blond hair and possibly a goatee. He was last known to live in Waipio Valley.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating the theft of fence posts from county property along the Hāmākua Coast.

Sometime between 2 p.m. Tuesday (July 7) and 8:30 a.m. Thursday (July 9), unknown persons pulled 47 T-rail posts out of the ground and removed them from county property along Highway 19 (Hawaiʻi Belt Road) just on the Paʻauilo side of the 35-mile marker. Each post was 6 1/2 feet long and silver in color.

A 23-year-old man has died from injuries he sustained in a three-vehicle crash along the Hāmākua Coast on June 19.

Michael T. Moore of Laupāhoehoe was pronounced dead at The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu at 1:34 a.m. Wednesday (July 1). The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Five people were injured—one critically—in a three-vehicle crash Friday (June 19) on the Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Highway 19) at Maulua Gulch along the Hāmākua Coast.

Responding to a 9:14 a.m. call, police learned that a 2003 Toyota pickup truck traveling south near the 23-mile marker crossed the centerline and sideswiped a 2008 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer traveling north. The tractor-trailer lost control and crossed the centerline, colliding with a 2003 Chevrolet four-door sedan traveling south.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 1:44 p.m. alarm Saturday (May 16) to a brushfire near Kalopa Makai Road in Hamakua.

Firefighters arrived to find tall grass in a farm lot burning, rapidly growing due to wind and moving towards a residence. Crews were able to slow the fire's progress using Chopper One performing water drops and ground units.

Hawaiʻi Island police have arrested 24-year-old Rickie Andaya-Tabucbuc, who is being featured this month on the public access TV show “Hawaiʻi Island’s Most Wanted.” He turned himself in Tuesday (December 9) at the Hāmākua police station, where he was arrested and charged with two counts of revocation of probation.
