Fire/Rescue crews responded to a 10:43 a.m. alarm Tuesday (Oct 3) to the Papaaloa Road and Oshiro Camp Road intersection for a brush fire in Laupahoehoe.

Crews found a brushfire in vacant land buring 10-12 foot tall grass. The fire rapidly spread due to gusty trade winds at 25-35 mph. By 12:30 p.m. the fire was under control and had burned about 20 acres.

ArcLight agrees to sell Hamakua Energy Partners plant to new HEI subsidiary

An affiliate of ArcLight Capital Partners, a Boston-based private equity firm (ArcLight) focused on energy infrastructure investments, has signed an agreement to sell its 60-megawatt Hamakua Energy Partners plant for an undisclosed price to Pacific Current, a newly established subsidiary of Hawaiian Electric Industries (HEI).

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating an incident involving the theft of several handguns from a shipping container in the Hāmākua District.

On Tuesday (August 8), police were called to a vacant Paʻauilo Mauka Road property after a caretaker noticed that a door on the shipping container was pried opened. In addition to a red portable Honda generator, the victim, a 78-year-old Alaska man, told police that several collectible Smith & Wesson, Colt and AMT revolvers and semi-automatic pistols were taken from the container.

HELCO restores power to 900 customers, crews continue to work in the field

Overnight, Hawai‘i Electric Light restored electric service to 900 customers in various parts of Hāmākua, upper Puna, and Kona that were impacted by high winds from Tropical Storm Darby. About 100 customers in Hawaiian Paradise Park, Leilani Estates, Kapoho, Orchidland Estates, Honoka‘a, and Kailua-Kona remain without power.

Police are still searching for a Hamakua girl reported missing

Hawaiʻi Island police are renewing their request for information about a 16-year-old Hāmākua girl who was reported missing. Shalee Minamishin was last seen in the Hāmākua District on July 31. She is described as 5-foot-3, 100 pounds with brown eyes and long brown hair.
