Fire/rescue crews responded to a 12:17 p.m. alarm Saturday (May 26) for a report of missing kayakers off the Kohala coastline at about the nine mile marker of Akoni Pule Highway.

A 29 year-old woman and an eight year old girl were last seen in a kayak about 200 yards offshore in rough surf with Northeast winds blowing at 20-35 mph with gusts or 45 mph or more.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 1:14 p.m. alarm Friday (Oct 28) to Pololu Valley Beach for a man who nearly drowned.

The 59 year-old man found himself in trouble while in the ocean due to his unfamiliarity with the beach and ocean currents at Pololu Valley beach. The man was pulled from the water by friends and bystanders.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 12:42 p.m. alarm Wednesday (Sept 14) for two Opihi pickers in the ocean off Paukaa Drive in North Hilo after a witness called 911 for help.

Rescue personnel found an opihi picker treading water 50 yards offshore who directed crews to where the second opihi picker was last seen. The first picker was airlifted from the ocean with Chopper One as a fire department rescue specialist searched for the second picker.

Fire/rescue responded to a 5:16 p.m. alarm Saturday (July 9) for a report of a boat in distress off Koae Road in Papaikou.

Upon arrival a fishing boat was found aground on the shoreline with nobody on board. The fire department Chopper One performed an aerial search of the surrounding area while rescue divers performed a search of the vessel, surrounding coastline and waters offshore but did not find anyone.

The Hawaii Fire Department invites the public to attend the groundbreaking and dedication ceremony of its Makalei Fire Station site located south of the 32 mile marker on the Mauka side of the old Mamalahoa Highway across Makalei Drive, North Kona. Fire/rescue crews responded to a 2:55 p.m. alarm Wednesday (April 27) to search for a lost hiker in the Laupahoehoe area.

The male hiker left a hunting station 2.8 miles above the 30 mile marker on Highway 19 at 7 a.m., was unable to find his way back to his vehicle and called 911 for help.
