Hawaiian Electric Companies’ EV fast charger program extended

The Hawaiian Electric Companies have gained approval to continue the DC Fast Charger program designed to encourage ownership of plug-in electric vehicles (EV) in Hawai‘i. The Hawai‘i Public Utilities Commission approved the companies’ request to extend two EV pilot charging rates for five more years.

With the increase in demand for electrical vehicles, the state of Hawai'i is re-charging its highly successful EV Ready Rebate Program with an additional $350,000 for rebates on new electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and chargers. The state has also extended the deadline for the rebates from March 31 to Nov. 1, 2012.

Hawaii Electric Light Company has pilot electric vehicle (EV) charging rates available. The rates are designed to help promote EVs and encourage charging during off-peak hours. Customers who sign up for the optional time-of-use rates are offered lower rates from 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Charging during off-peak hours helps us take advantage of more off-peak renewable resources and avoid running more expensive diesel generators during peak, high-demand periods.
