Big Island police will increase enforcement of drunk driving as part of a national campaign called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” which runs August 19 through September 5.

To help bring awareness to the upcoming campaign, the Police Department’s Traffic Services Section plans a sign-waving event on Kamehameha Avenue in Hilo from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday (August 14). Volunteers are encouraged to participate.

During the week of January 1, 2012, through January 8, 2012, Big Island police arrested 31 motorists for drunk driving. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21. 

So far this year, there have been 31 DUI arrests compared with 22 during the same period last year, an increase of 40.9 percent.

During the week of November 14, 2011, through November 20, 2011, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,307 DUI arrests compared with 1,363 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.1 percent.

So far this year, there have been 1,233 DUI arrests compared with 1,280 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.7 percent.
