The County of Hawai’i invites the public to sign a condolence book to honor the late U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka. Condolence books will be available for signing at the reception desks of both the Hilo Mayor’s Office and the Kona Mayor’s Office.

U.S. Senators Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) and Thomas Carper (D-Delaware) introduced the Furthering International Nuclear Safety Act of 2011 yesterday, a bill that would enhance worldwide cooperation on nuclear safety. Representative Jeff Fortenberry (R-Nebraska) intends to introduce a companion bill later this month in the House of Representatives.

The United States Senate approved a two-week continuing resolution today by a vote of 91-9.  The bill will keep the federal government open through at least March 18.   Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii) voted to support the measure and issued the following statement today:

Hawaii is expected to receive $39,311,983 to fund teacher salaries and benefits and save about 700 education-related jobs, Senators Daniel K. Inouye and Daniel K. Akaka announced today.

The funds are provided in a $26 billion state aid bill approved by the U.S. Senate.  The bill passed today 61-39 with Senator Inouye and Senator Akaka voting in favor of the measure.
